Bridging the Gender Gap in STEM and Deep Tech

In recent years, the under-representation of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) has become a growing concern. Despite women making up 48.1% of doctoral graduates at the European level in 2018, the latest gender equality statistics show minimal progress in increasing their representation among doctoral graduates in STEM fields. 

This disparity is even more pronounced in the realm of deep tech, where innovation is driven by cutting-edge research and scientific breakthroughs. While STEM forms the foundation, deep tech pushes the boundaries of innovation. Increasing female representation in STEM could significantly impact deep tech, but numerous challenges and barriers hinder women’s participation in this sector.

Fostering Female Participation in Deep Tech

Given the underrepresentation of women as STEM professionals, a crucial question arises: How can deep tech promote the participation of women entrepreneurs?

To tackle this issue, Digital Future Society and Mobile World Capital Barcelona’s Collider programme have joined forces. The Collider programme is dedicated to tech transfer, supporting scientific and innovative projects as they transition from lab to market. Through this collaboration, both programmes aim to bridge the gender gap and provide actionable strategies for similar initiatives across Europe to enhance women's involvement.

Introducing the Guidelines

Our comprehensive guidelines offer:

  • Current Landscape Analysis: An in-depth look at the current state of women in STEM and entrepreneurship. 

  • Compelling Arguments: Reasons for addressing the under-representation of women in STEM and deep tech. 

  • Actionable Recommendations: Practical steps that deep-tech venture building programmes can implement to foster female participation. 


By following these guidelines, programmes like the Collider can make significant strides toward gender equality, ensuring that more women have the opportunity to contribute to and benefit from the advancements in deep tech.
