Should we accept monetary compensation for data that we now provide for free?Understandably, the question prompts an immediate response. But it also reveals nuances
that need further consideration.
For example, if we agree to sell our information and put it at the disposal of the market, what
price should it have? Would it be a fixed rate - the same for everyone? Or could the data of
some people be worth more than others? And what would happen if someone refuse to sell
their data? Would that mean that only the most economically stable could afford not to sell
their most private information to others?
And if so, wouldn’t we be favouring a situation of inequality, pushing the most vulnerable to
sell their data and their privacy? Would that turn our data into a luxury good? Would there
then also be social classes for data protection?
