How can technology help to optimize the use of irrigation water in the city’s green areas?
In a context of climate emergency, sustainability and the conscious use of natural resources, such as water, has become a priority. In Catalonia, the alert for drought has driven municipalities, such as Esplugues de Llobregat, to promote a responsible use of irrigation water with the aim to reduce its overall use. These efforts should also work to maintain public areas green as they are linked to the mental and physical well-being of the population.
As climate change alters the irrigation needs of parks and green spaces, the challenge lies in finding innovative technological solutions that allow for optimizing water use for irrigation, as well as reducing the maintenance cost of green spaces of the municipality of Esplugues. In this way, guarantee more appropriate and comprehensive management that ensures the continuity of the service, while reducing the resources used.
Esplugues’ previous use of sensors and automation in irrigation, has shown that there is room for improvement in the agility and effectiveness of these measures, and the interoperability with other systems. Therefore, the final aim is to find solutions that can focus on the monitoring and control of irrigation water; prediction and automation of irrigation in real time; status and management of water infrastructures and integrated management initiatives.
The project contributes to the following SDGs:
SDG 4 – CLEAN WATER AND SANITATION / SDG 6 – INNOVATION AND INFRASTRUCTURES / SDG 11 – SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES
The solutions must have a level of technological development equal to or greater than TRL 6 (Technology Readiness Level), and their implementation through a pilot must be viable, both technically and economically, in a timeframe between 6-9 months. Those solutions that have scalability potential and whose management is as autonomous/independent as possible will be valued positively.
The winning solution will be piloted in the municipality of Esplugues de Llobregat.
– Tools or equipment monitoring and control of the use of water for irrigation.
– Real-time irrigation prediction and automation systems.
– Conditions and management of water infrastructures.
– Integrated management initiatives, etc.

Autonomous Irrigation Solution using virtual sensors learning models and AI
Trigger Systems has introduced an intelligent autonomous irrigation solution, where the platform’s controllers decide, through more than 300 multiple parameters, the quantity and the timing to apply water. The system learns from multiple sources such as the environment, user behaviour, weather data, weather forecasts, soil moisture sensors, flow meter, pressure and uses satellite and video channel for control feedback.
